Quick Guide: Buying a VR Headset

Here are some information on buying a VR headset if you have none by now. Please mind that you should do your own research as well. But basically any headset on this list has enough power and visual quality for VR movies. So pick any of them and you will be fine.

1) Functions of VR Headsets — Games, entertainment & more

VR headsets do more than gaming. Here’s the short list:

  • Gaming: Immersive single-player and multiplayer titles, native game stores for each headset brand and cross-play with PC/console (on supported devices). Games vary from relaxing puzzles to action packed shooters and more.
  • Entertainment: 360° videos, virtual cinemas, streaming apps, live concerts and social VR hangouts.
  • Fitness & wellness: VR workouts, rhythm games and guided meditation apps that actually get you moving.
  • Productivity & creativity: Virtual meeting rooms, 3D design tools and whiteboards for hybrid teams. 3D painting and more.
  • Learning & training: Simulators, language learning, and professional training for enterprise users.

Tip: check if a headset is "standalone" (no PC/console needed) or "tethered" (needs a powerful PC or console).

Tethered VR headsets deliver a higher graphics quality and more applications as they are powered by gaming PCs normally - but on video display they are exactly the same quality. Except those headsets wirth much higher resolution per eye - but these are expensive and always require a PC.

2) Selection: Standalone VR Headsets

Standalone headsets are plug-and-play: no PC or console required. They’re the best pick for most people who want simplicity. Also all of the standalone headsets CAN be connected to a PC as well (wired or wireless) to improve graphic details by the power of the PC.

  • Meta Quest series — great app store, lots of games, solid ecosystem for consumers. Recommend the latest Quest 3 and 3s
  • Pico — strong hardware for the price in many regions, comfortable and lightweight designs. Different offers in the pico marketplace for games and apps - Meta has a wider range and exclusive titels.
  • HTC VIVE Focus / Vision — leans toward pros and enterprise; higher-end screens and business features.
  • Other niche options — enterprise-focused models, or premium units intended for developers and arcades.

3) Prices & performance — quick comparison

Price changes often. Below is a snapshot-style comparison useful for a quick overview.

Meta Quest 3 and 3s

3s is the cheaper model at slightly under 300 € on offers while the Quest 3 starts at ut Quest 3 is having the better lenses for a clearer view. There is not supposed to be a model update in 2026 - so you are safe to buy now.

We totally recommend to buy the Quest models as they are state of the art and offer great content and a easy to use experience.

Pico 4

The Pico headsets are offering a good performance that is totally comparable to the Meta headsets. Good visual quality and processors. They start at about 480 €. The headsets come with a good headmount from the start while the Meta need additionally a good mount that can cost from 30 € extra. The downside in our opinion is the shop and software that offers slightly less games and apps.

HTC Vive Focus & Vision

This headset costs nearly 3 times as much as the cheapest Quest headset but offers higher resolution, more FOV, more RAM and features such as Eye-tracking. Again: Good for gaming, irrelevant for videos. But if you can pay this price you will get a better performance and visuals.

Short buying checklist

  • Do you want plug-and-play (standalone) or PC/console-powered visuals?
  • How important are battery life, weight, and comfort for long sessions?
  • Check the app/game library and ecosystem before you buy.
  • Think about storage: more installs and media need more GB.
  • For serious visuals or enterprise use, expect to pay a premium.
